The difference we make

Despite the challenging times Royal Papworth Charity continues to provide an exceptional level of vital support to the hospital which often has a transformational and immediate impact. We are truly grateful to all of our wonderful supporters who have joined us to raise money for the benefit of all of our patients, their relatives and our staff. This year has been testing for us all and as we look ahead we know there are likely to be more difficulties to come as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. From everyone at Royal Papworth Charity, we thank you for standing with us and for your kindness and generosity.

Royal Papworth Charity has awarded a number of grants in support of a wide variety of projects designed to enhance the features, facilities, environment, research and the services of Royal Papworth Hospital.

From disability guides and Nurse Training Apprenticeships to a new hybrid theatre Royal Papworth has been fundamental in transforming the lives of thousands and providing hope for future patients. Only together can we continue to fund the delivery of world-leading medicine at Royal Papworth Hospital. Your continued support is vital as only together can we change the way heart and lung disease is treated forever, and save more lives.

The Heart and Lung Research Institute

In the UK alone, one in four of us will die from heart disease and half of these deaths will be sudden and totally unexpected. The Heart and Lung Research Institute (HLRI) will be home to over 380 scientists and state-of-the-art laboratories in genomics, population sciences, research into cellular mechanisms of disease and translational science, transforming the way heart and lung disease is treated globally. The Charity has pledged to contribute £5 million to the build of the HLRI to ensure our patients always have access to the world’s best cardiothoracic medicine.

DCD (non-beating) Heart Transplant

The DCD heart transplantation technique- pioneered at Royal Papworth Hospital, involves using organs from donors who have died because their circulation has stopped, compared to the traditional method of Donation after Brainstem Death (DBD) donors whose death has been confirmed using neurological criteria. This technique has increased available hearts for transplantation by over 48%, saving countless lives. The Charity has been instrumental in funding the research behind the programme and providing the necessary equipment to enable these life-saving operations to go ahead.

Project Breathe

Project Breathe is a first of its kind, home monitoring trial for patients with Cystic Fibrosis. Our patients with Cystic Fibrosis have appointments much more often than other patients – anything from once a fortnight to once every three months depending on their health. With their nearest CF centre often some distance away, this is highly disruptive and costly. These appointments can also be highly stressful with poor results leading to a sudden admission into hospital. With Project Breathe our patients are able to take control by monitoring from home and tracking the changes in their health with all data being reviewed at the hospital. They can avoid unnecessary appointments, while the continual monitoring allows for early detection and treatment of clinical deteriorations. Project Breathe has been fundamental in enabling our clinical team to monitor our patients with Cystic Fibrosis during the coronavirus pandemic from home, reducing the need for already risky visits.
